Municipal noise criterion (City of Longueuil)

Context

The Costco Wholesale business centre in Saint-Hubert was generating significant noise nuisances for the neighbouring homes on rue Star.

The main noise sources identified:

  • refrigerated trucks
  • diesel compressors
  • trailer manoeuvres
  • backup alarms

The acoustic analyses showed noise levels reaching 66 to 67 dBA at the neighbouring residential boundaries.

The maximum threshold permitted by the City of Longueuil was 53 dBA.

The solution implemented

Ramo designed, built and installed a double-sided absorptive willow noise barrier. The system is based on:

  • a galvanized steel load-bearing structure
  • absorptive panels built around a mineral wool acoustic core
  • an outer facing of debarked willow

The wall works mainly through absorption and reduced sound transmission.

Results and performance

The acoustic simulations and validations show that the barrier makes it possible to meet the municipal criterion applicable to the adjacent residential zones.

The wall works through

  • acoustic absorption
  • a barrier effect
  • direct reduction of the sound transmission from the refrigeration compressors

Co-benefits

Operations maintained

Intensive logistics activities kept running without relocating operations.

Reduced nuisances

Direct reduction of noise impacts on the adjacent residential neighbourhood.

Architectural integration

A superior finish compared to a conventional concrete barrier.

Social acceptance

A solution better accepted by local residents, improving the coexistence between the commercial activity and the neighbourhood.
