Vegetated barrier Intercept™

A living visual screen, which can be effective against wind, dust and flying plastic waste.

The challenge

Industrial, agricultural, and municipal sites are exposed to constant nuisances:

  • prevailing winds
  • dispersion of dust and fine particles
  • scattering of lightweight debris (plastic film, paper)
  • visual impact on the communities

Conventional solutions are rigid and costly, and they may require significant maintenance.

The solution

Intercept™ is a vegetated barrier designed to reduce nuisances at the source.

Planted in dense rows, it acts as a windbreak, limits the dispersion of dust or fine particles, and intercepts windblown waste, especially on landfill sites.

On landfill sites, the barrier effectively intercepts lightweight debris such as bags, plastics, and paper carried by the wind. It is an economical and durable solution that replaces or complements fixed nets.

Fast-growing willow provides progressive performance from the first season, with 100% effectiveness reached by the second growing season.

At the Compo-Haut-Richelieu site, the Intercept™ barrier seen from the road, in two growing seasons, the row of willows became denser and closed the screen. Drag the slider to compare.

Applications

01

Visual screen

Shield operations from the view of neighbours and road users.

02

Anti-dust

Slow the wind and limit the dispersion of dust or fine particles generated by operations.

03

Interception of windblown debris

Retain lightweight debris such as bags, plastics, and paper before it leaves landfill sites.

04

Roadside windbreak screen

Protect the roadway from wind, snow, and dust with a living vegetated screen.

Project steps

01

Site diagnosis

Analysis of prevailing winds, sources of nuisance and neighbourhood issues.

02

Design

Sizing the vegetated barrier according to the path of the emissions to capture.

03

Dense planting

High-density planting for rapid effectiveness.

04

Agronomic monitoring

Agronomic monitoring of the planting, with interventions as needed to maintain performance over time.

What makes the difference

  • Economical solution: low planting and maintenance costs compared with nets and fixed screens.
  • Fast growth: progressive performance from the first season. Optimal effectiveness from the second season.
  • Evolving solution: unlike fixed infrastructure, the barrier becomes denser over time.
  • Double benefit: operational nuisance control plus environmental gains such as habitat and carbon capture.

Vegetated barrier (Frequently asked questions)

When does a willow vegetated barrier become effective?

Nuisance reduction is visible from the first season. Performance increases as the screen becomes denser.

How tall can a willow vegetated barrier grow?

Height depends on varieties and conditions, but willows can reach 25 feet within a few years.

What maintenance is required?

Maintenance is minimal: establishment monitoring during the first years, followed by simple monitoring. The barrier naturally becomes denser over time, without maintenance pruning.

Where should a vegetated barrier be installed?

Industrial, agricultural, mining, or municipal sites: any situation where wind, the dispersion of dust/fine particles, or visual nuisances must be controlled.
