Context
The Parc des Riverains, located near the Lavaltrie secondary school, includes outdoor basketball courts whose use generates noise nuisance for neighbouring homes.
The noise typical of basketball courts (repeated impacts of balls on hard surfaces and backboards) is an impulsive noise, perceived as particularly intrusive in a quiet residential area. A targeted acoustic intervention was needed to restore residents' comfort while maintaining the park's sporting use.
The solution implemented
Ramo designed a 35 m double-sided woven willow noise barrier, installed on the existing mound at the edge of the courts. The design combines two acoustic principles:
- barrier effect: reduced noise transmission toward the homes
- absorption: attenuation of reflections and reduced lateral propagation
The approach draws on an acoustic study carried out by Vinacoustik, which simulated sound levels before and after installation and made it possible to size the wall's height, length and optimal positioning. The 3 m height ensures effective acoustic coverage above the playing area.
Co-benefits
Landscape integration
Willow facing blends into a municipal park better than a conventional concrete wall.
Social acceptance
A concrete response to residents' complaints while preserving access to outdoor sport.
Replicable
A model case for schools, municipal parks and pickleball or basketball courts.
Low susceptibility to graffiti
Willow facades offer little purchase for graffiti.
