A green solution for waste landfills

Ramo has implemented its Evaplant® phytotreatment technology to reduce leachate at the Saint-Lambert-de-Lauzon engineered landfill, operated by the Régie intermunicipale des Chutes-de-la-Chaudière.

Ramo's Evaplant® system at the Saint-Lambert-de-Lauzon landfill

Saint-Lambert-de-Lauzon, October 12, 2023. The Régie intermunicipale de gestion des déchets des Chutes-de-la-Chaudière commissioned Ramo in September 2021 to establish its Evaplant® technology at the Saint-Lambert-de-Lauzon landfill. This site is responsible for disposing of solid waste from the City of Lévis and the Municipality of Saint-Lambert-de-Lauzon. The Evaplant® technology, which required total investments of $550,000, has been operational in Saint-Lambert-de-Lauzon since June 2022.

Evaplant® relies on the evapotranspiration of willows to reduce the volume of leachate from landfill sites. The technology also enables the degradation of certain contaminants by soil micro-organisms, as well as the absorption of pollutants by the willows. Fully automated, the irrigation is adjusted according to the needs of the willows and weather conditions.

The Evaplant® technology complements existing leachate treatment facilities at landfills; in particular, it reduces the volumes of water treated in the environment. The Evaplant® technology also gives landfill sites a renewed agri-environmental purpose by valorizing the areas of former landfill cells that are no longer in operation.

"In Saint-Lambert-de-Lauzon, in 2022, the Régie intermunicipale de gestion des déchets des Chutes-de-la-Chaudière, Ramo and its Evaplant® technology reduced the site's water discharge by 3,000,000 litres in just 4 months of operation (a volume greater than that of an Olympic swimming pool). In addition, 45 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent will be captured each year in the willow wood."
- Francis Allard, President of Ramo

A few facts about the project

  • 28,800 willows planted over an area of 1.8 hectares (18,000 m²)
  • Projected annual production of 25 tonnes of dry wood matter
  • Projected capture of 45 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per year
  • Third deployment of the Evaplant® technology in Quebec, after the WM engineered landfills in Sainte-Sophie and Drummondville
  • This project received support from the 2 Billion Trees program of Natural Resources Canada and the Green Municipal Fund

About Ramo

For 15 years, Ramo has developed plant-based technologies to solve environmental problems. Its unique circular-economy model built around willow plantations helps address challenges such as the restoration of degraded sites, climate change, wastewater management and the manufacturing of eco-products to counter noise and visual pollution.
