How an ecological noise barrier concretely improves residents' quality of life in Boucherville

Boucherville, September 15, 2025. A 740-metre-long wooden noise barrier has been installed along boulevard Industriel in Boucherville. A concrete, ecological and local answer to a major public health issue: road noise.
Designed by the company Ramo, this 100% Québec-made wall stands out for its facing of willows from the company's own plantations (a renewable species that helps keep its carbon footprint very low). Combining acoustic performance, durability and landscape integration, it reflects a site development approach that is both functional and environmentally responsible. This type of wall also proves effective at reducing noise from other sources, whether rail, industrial or sports-related.
In a context where more than 50% of Quebecers are exposed to excessive road noise (source: MSSS), this type of infrastructure shows that it is possible to act locally with a sustainable solution. The City of Boucherville chose an ecological, local product, responding to the concerns raised by residents.
"This project proves that municipalities can make choices that are coherent, local, effective and aligned with decarbonization goals."
"The noise barrier has really cut down the noise coming from the boulevard. For example, we used to hear passers-by's conversations (that's no longer the case). And on top of that, we really like how it looks."
Climbing plants, already established at the base of the wall, will gradually cover the structure over the seasons, further strengthening its visual integration.
The project was carried out in collaboration with engineering firms Génipur and Cima+, general contractor Excavation Darche, and installer subcontractor les Entreprises JC Beaudet.
